General Motors (GM) is utilizing artificial intelligence to address a significant hurdle in the widespread adoption of electric vehicles: the availability of charging stations. The company is leveraging AI and machine learning technologies to identify optimal locations for new EV charging infrastructure across the United States.

GM’s strategic approach involves using AI tools to analyze traffic patterns and geospatial data, aiming to pinpoint the most convenient charging locations for EV drivers. This predictive analytics capability allows GM to deploy its charging stations efficiently, ensuring they are situated where they’re needed most.

While EV sales have been steadily increasing, the expansion of charging infrastructure is crucial to keep pace with the rising demand. To that end, GM is collaborating with EVgo, a major public EV charging network, to construct 2,850 DC public charging stalls. Of these, 400 will be fast-charging stalls located at key destinations in major metropolitan areas.

GM has stated that the new stations will feature high-power 350-kilowatt fast chargers and user-friendly layouts. Many locations will also incorporate all-weather canopies and enhanced lighting to ensure safety and convenience for EV drivers.

To support families on road trips and long-distance travel, GM has partnered with Pilot Travel Centers and EVgo to add up to 2,000 DC fast-charging stalls at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers throughout the country. According to GM, more than 130 of these locations are already open to the public.

The expansion of EV charging stations is viewed as a crucial step in fostering widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Switching to an EV offers benefits for both personal finances and the environment, as EVs are quieter and produce zero tailpipe emissions. Furthermore, EV drivers can anticipate saving around $1,500 annually on gas and maintenance, and some EV models are also eligible for a $7,500 tax credit.

“Thanks to AI and machine learning, GM is addressing the critical need for more EV charging stations in strategic locations across the U.S., helping to make EV ownership possible for more drivers than ever before,” GM stated.
