Global Youth Drive Demand for Electric Vehicles
Young people around the world are increasingly drawn to electric vehicles (EVs), according to a survey by Economist Impact, sponsored by Nissan. The study, which involved 3,750 respondents across 15 cities, points to a substantial surge in EV ownership anticipated over the next decade, fueled by growing concerns about sustainability and rising demand in urban areas. This shift in attitude is particularly noticeable among young urban dwellers, who demonstrate a high level of familiarity with the technology and prioritize environmentally friendly transportation solutions while balancing practicality, cost, and convenience.

Key findings from the survey show that 57% of respondents are prepared to adapt their travel habits to lessen their carbon footprint. Furthermore, the study projects an increase in EV ownership from the current 23% to over 35% within the next ten years. Notably, enthusiasm is strongest in emerging cities, where 44% of respondents are planning to switch to EVs within the next five years.
Survey Highlights EV Trends
Nissan’s collaboration with Economist Impact underscores a significant shift in how younger generations view transportation. The survey, which focused on urban residents aged 18-35, reveals that EVs are the preferred choice, with a particularly strong interest in pollution-heavy emerging cities, such as Shanghai and Mexico City. While sustainability is a major driver of this trend, the adoption of EVs also hinges on factors like battery performance, the availability of charging infrastructure, and affordability.
Sustainability Focus
Over half of the study’s participants expressed that reducing emissions is a key priority, with those in emerging cities viewing it as an urgent concern.
Tech Awareness
Approximately 40% of respondents are excited by innovations such as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology and advancements in energy storage solutions.
Ownership Growth
One-third of the survey participants anticipate owning EVs within the next decade, a considerable increase from the current 23% ownership rate.
“This research provides important insights into the younger generations’ vision of the future of mobility. Their choices will directly affect how transportation evolves,” said Ritu Bhandari, Asia-Pacific Sustainability lead at Economist Impact.
Practical considerations remain crucial, with cities needing to find ways to align their environmental goals with affordable and accessible transportation options. The findings suggest that integrating these aspects will be key to the large-scale adoption of EVs.
Emerging Cities Lead EV Enthusiasm
The survey highlights a clear contrast between developed and emerging cities in terms of EV adoption. In locations like Sao Paulo, Brazil, 44% of young people are planning to drive EVs soon, compared to 31% in more developed urban centers. This inclination is mostly driven by concerns around pollution and heavy congestion in these areas, generating greater demand for cleaner transportation options, and for energy solutions.
Meanwhile, respondents in wealthier markets placed more emphasis on the costs associated with EVs, which continue to be a barrier to entry despite growing interest. Half of the respondents recognize the potential for EVs to store renewable energy or power devices, especially in emerging markets where such applications could be vital during emergencies.
This is in line with Nissan’s ongoing commitment to electrification. Lavanya Wadgaonkar, Nissan’s corporate vice president of Global Communications, noted, “We believe in making mobility sustainable through electrification—it is a key factor that is shaping the future of transportation.”
Nissan’s Role in Mobility
Nissan is leveraging these findings to refine its EV strategy, ensuring a focus on areas like affordability, infrastructure development, and technological innovation. By focusing on advancements in battery technology. and V2X solutions, the company intends to make EVs viable and more accessible for mass adoption. The survey outcomes underscore Nissan’s dedication to a sustainable and inclusive transportation future, aligning with the evolving preferences of younger generations worldwide.
