General Motors and Hyundai are reportedly exploring a strategic partnership with wide-ranging implications for both automakers. The potential deal could see Hyundai supply GM with electric vans, while GM might provide Hyundai with a pickup truck based on the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
The scope of this partnership extends beyond simply vehicle swaps. The two companies initially announced their exploration of a partnership focused on joint product development, manufacturing, and clean energy initiatives last fall. Recent reports, including one from Reuters, suggest the deal is taking shape, with Hyundai potentially supplying GM with two electric commercial vans in return for a GM-produced pickup truck based on the Colorado and Canyon platforms.

One of the electric vans is reportedly based on the Hyundai ST1 model and would be imported from South Korea. Hyundai may consider North American production as early as 2028, potentially at an existing plant, a contract manufacturer, or an all-new facility, which by 2032 could produce over 100,000 units annually. This move comes as GM is expected to phase out its aging Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans, making the Hyundai-sourced EVs a viable replacement.
Beyond electric vans, the partnership could involve a potential pickup truck from GM for Hyundai. This raises questions about how such a truck might fit into Hyundai’s existing lineup and whether it could be a replacement for Hyundai Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz, which had sales of just over 32,000 units in the U.S. last year, is positioned in a similar market segment as the Colorado and GMC Canyon. Hyundai has also reportedly expressed interest in versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, though GM has yet to offer those options.
Further, the automakers are considering collaboration in Brazil. Hyundai is reportedly looking to supply GM with compact crossovers based on the Creta, which is already produced in Brazil. This highlights a broader strategy of leveraging existing models and manufacturing capabilities to expand market reach.

The potential partnership is poised to extend beyond vehicles. The companies are said to be exploring joint ventures in areas such as joint purchasing and the collaborative development of various components, from batteries to computer chips. This comprehensive approach hints at a strategic alliance that could redefine the future of both companies in the rapidly evolving automotive market, particularly with the shift toward electric and sustainable technologies.
