GWM Aims High with Supercar Project Challenging Ferrari’s Dominance
Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) has confirmed it’s developing a high-performance supercar that boldly challenges Ferrari’s market position. The project, in development since 2019, reflects China’s growing ambitions in the global supercar market.
GWM Chief Technology Officer Wu Huixiao revealed details about the supercar in a recent Weibo interview. Wu emphasized that the vehicle will deliver ‘explosive adrenaline and dopamine,’ positioning it as an emotional and performance rival to million-dollar European hypercars. The exact specifications remain confidential, but the company is exploring various powertrain options.
The upcoming supercar may not use GWM’s recently developed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid, originally designed for their luxury Tank SUV line, as it might be too large. Alternatives being considered include the company’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid from the Tank 700 or the advanced 2.0-liter turbocharged Hi4-Z hybrid system, which produces 635 kW (851 hp) and 1139 Nm of torque with two electric motors.
GWM Chairman Jack Wei, who has been spotted driving a Ferrari SF90 in China, appears personally invested in the project. The company has recruited international performance experts and is exploring advanced materials like carbon fiber to achieve its ambitious goals. While a launch date remains undecided, cost control is a top priority during development.
GWM’s objective is clear: to create a world-class performance machine that challenges the dominance of established European luxury car manufacturers. The development of this supercar demonstrates China’s growing capabilities and ambitions in the high-performance vehicle market.
