Hamburg, burdened by significant traffic congestion, is embarking on an ambitious plan to revolutionize its transportation system. With the goal of having 80% of all journeys made by public transport, bicycle, or on foot by 2030, the city is exploring innovative solutions to achieve this vision. A key component of this strategy involves incorporating self-driving minibuses, intending to fill transit gaps and minimize emissions.
Next year, the city plans to introduce a fleet of up to 20 autonomous electric minibuses. This initiative, known as ALIKE, will initially provide free, on-demand rides across approximately 50 square kilometers. The pilot program is scheduled to run until 2026, with the potential to significantly expand the fleet, aiming for 10,000 vehicles by 2030. The ultimate aim is to create a public transportation system so efficient and accessible that it diminishes the reliance on private vehicles. This project demonstrates Hamburg’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for residents, as well as its contribution to global emission targets.
