Meal-kit delivery company HelloFresh has taken significant steps toward reducing its carbon footprint by integrating 70 all-electric Rivian vans into its fleet. This substantial order represents nearly a quarter of HelloFresh’s total fleet vehicles and marks a major milestone for Rivian as it expands its commercial EV business beyond its previous exclusivity agreement with Amazon.
The introduction of these electric vehicles has already yielded impressive environmental benefits. According to HelloFresh’s recent blog post, the switch has resulted in an estimated savings of 20,000 gallons of gasoline and reduced the company’s CO2 emissions by 200 tonnes. This move aligns with HelloFresh’s sustainability goals while supporting Rivian’s diversification efforts in the commercial EV market.
Rivian’s commercial van production began in 2021 following Amazon’s initial order of 100,000 vehicles as part of the e-commerce giant’s climate initiative. Although Rivian maintained its relationship with Amazon, producing 20,000 vans for their fleet as of February, the company has been working to expand its customer base since ending the exclusivity agreement in November 2023. The automaker officially opened its commercial van sales to other businesses in February 2025 after a year of preparing its commercial fleet infrastructure, including service capabilities and digital platforms.
Throughout this transition period, Rivian conducted various trials with potential fleet customers to gather valuable feedback. HelloFresh stands out as the first major client to publicly announce the adoption of Rivian’s commercial EVs, demonstrating confidence in the technology and the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. As Rivian continues to attract more commercial customers, it will maintain its production line for Amazon while expanding its broader business clientele.
This significant partnership between HelloFresh and Rivian highlights the growing demand for sustainable delivery solutions in the logistics industry. The success of this implementation could potentially encourage other companies to follow suit, further accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in commercial fleets.
