An Indianapolis man has been charged after allegedly breaking into a pickup truck in a northeast Indianapolis parking lot and subsequently leading police on a chase. Anthony Thompson, 28, faces felony resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and misdemeanor criminal mischief charges.
According to court documents, investigators with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force were conducting surveillance near East 75th Street and North Shadeland Avenue on Wednesday, April 23, due to multiple reports of vehicle break-ins in the area. Shortly after 11 p.m., a detective observed a green Pontiac Grand Prix enter the parking lot of a nearby Walgreens and park on the southeast side of the lot.
The detective recognized the vehicle as belonging to Anthony Thompson, whose information had been gathered during a previous investigation. The detective then witnessed Thompson approach the passenger side of a nearby pickup truck, smash its window, and shine a flashlight inside, apparently searching for something.
Thompson returned to his vehicle and left the parking lot, traveling west onto East 75th Street. A team of officers continued to surveil Thompson until the IMPD SWAT grapple vehicle was able to position itself behind him near the intersection of Graham Road and Binford Boulevard. The initial attempt to stop Thompson’s vehicle was unsuccessful, leading to a chase that continued until Thompson stopped in the 6300 block of Binford Boulevard.
Upon arrest, Thompson allegedly told officers he didn’t know why he was being chased, explaining his reason for fleeing. A search of the Pontiac Grand Prix revealed several incriminating items, including:
- The driver’s license and bank card of one of Thompson’s previous theft victims
- A flashlight in the passenger seat
- A handgun magazine in the center console
- A black box containing various calibers of ammunition and handgun magazines in the trunk
Police also seized an iPhone believed to belong to Thompson. During a final search of the crime scene, officers found an additional box containing multiple live .357 rounds of ammunition on the ground.
Thompson’s initial hearing is scheduled for April 28 at 8:30 a.m. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of local law enforcement to combat vehicle break-ins and related crimes in the Indianapolis area.
