Jaguar is making a bold leap into its all-electric future, unveiling the Type 00 Vision Concept during Miami Art Week. This concept car provides a glimpse into the revitalized brand’s strategy, leveraging its experience in Formula E racing.
Jaguar’s Electric Transformation
It’s been a few years since Jaguar declared its commitment to going all-electric in 2021. Now, with the Type 00 Vision Concept, the legendary British marque is ready to make its first move into an EV road car range. The anticipation has been building following a vibrant new marketing campaign.
Jaguar already had a head start in the world of EV performance cars by entering Formula E in 2016, well before other major manufacturers. The journey has since culminated in a stunning one-two victory in Monaco and the Teams’ World Championship win on home turf in London in 2023/24. This success provides the foundation for the exciting Type 00 Vision Concept.
The Type 00 Vision Concept
The Type 00 Vision Concept is, according to Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern, “a pure expression of Jaguar’s new creative philosophy.” He added, “It is our first physical manifestation and the foundation stone for a new family of Jaguars that will look unlike anything you’ve ever seen. A vision which strives for the highest level of artistic endeavour.”
The first new Jaguar, inspired by the Type 00, is scheduled to hit the road in 2026. It will be a four-door GT model, with an estimated starting price of around £100,000 without options. The ‘Type’ prefix links it to its predecessors, while ‘00’ highlights its zero tailpipe emissions. Other models will follow, based on the new Jaguar Electrical Architecture (JEA).
Performance and Technology from Formula E
Jaguar’s Managing Director, Rawdon Glover, emphasized the significance of Formula E as a platform for technology innovation. He stated that “Unlike a lot of the other motorsport platforms, it’s a direct transfer [in Formula E], and we can take the technology directly from the racing cars, into our own road cars.”
While specific performance figures are yet to be revealed, Jaguar has said the new GT will have a range of 770km (478 miles) WLTP on a single charge. It will also be able to add up to 321km (200 miles) of range in just 15 minutes with rapid charging.
“Managing heat, managing efficiency, regeneration and range – these things are all super important for our road cars and Formula E is the most punishing environment feasible to develop these in,” Glover explained.
Design of the Type 00 Vision Concept
Jaguar’s design team promised a car that would be “a copy of nothing,” a phrase that echoes Sir William Lyons, the brand’s founder. The Type 00’s design defies conventional EV aesthetics, taking inspiration from traditional performance cars.
The car’s design features a long bonnet, steeply raked windshield, a sloping roofline, and a boat tail rear, hinting at the legendary Jaguar E-type, especially at the rear quarters.
The car sits on 23-inch alloy wheels and features boxy arches extending from the monolithic body. The back is defined by a glassless tailgate and a distinctive horizontal strikethrough graphic, which hides full-width strip taillights.
Constantino Segui Gilabert, the marque’s chief exterior designer, said, “Jaguar is no place for ordinary. When you see a new Jaguar for the first time, it must have a sense of awe, of never having been seen before. Type 00 commands attention, like all the best Jaguars of the past. It is a dramatic presence, channelling a unique spirit of British creativity and originality.”
Interior Design
The interior of the Type 00 is minimalist, with dramatic butterfly doors and a ‘pantograph’ tailgate. A 3.2m-long brass spine runs through the cockpit, splitting two floating instrument panels which rise and fall, allowing for a digital detox when driving. The design uses materials like travertine stone, a tactile wool blend, and a ‘Prism case’ allows occupants to customize the interior mood by deploying three totems made of Brass, Travertine, and Alabaster. Tom Holden, chief interior designer, notes that “Deployable technologies are a hallmark of the interior. Screens glide silently and theatrically from the dashboard, while powered stowage areas slide open softly on demand, revealing hidden splashes of exuberant colour.”
With real-world testing already underway, the production version of the new Jaguar is scheduled to be unveiled in late 2025. Jaguar is also preparing for another World Championship, as it embraces its exciting all-electric future.
