Jaguar’s Electric Revolution: The Type 00 Vision Concept
After announcing its all-electric ambitions in 2021, Jaguar is making its first steps towards an all-electric road car lineup. The unveiling of the striking Type 00 Vision Concept at Miami Art Week signals a new era for the iconic British brand, built on the foundation of its successful Formula E racing program.
A Reset and a New Vision
Jaguar has undergone something of a reset in recent years, with the automotive world eagerly anticipating the future of the brand. The launch of the Type 00 Vision Concept follows a bold marketing campaign and represents a significant shift in design and technology.
Formula E: The Driving Force
Jaguar’s commitment to electric vehicles isn’t new. The company entered Formula E in 2016, gaining valuable experience and building its reputation in the electric motorsport arena. This has culminated in the Jaguar TCS Racing team’s outstanding performance, including a one-two victory in Monaco and the Teams’ World Championship title in London during the 2023/24 season. This success provides a strong base for the development and technology in Jaguar’s upcoming road cars.
The Type 00 Vision Concept: A Pure Expression
The Type 00 Vision Concept is described by Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, as “a pure expression of Jaguar’s new creative philosophy.” It’s designed to be the foundation for a new family of Jaguars. The first production car, inspired by the Type 00, will be a four-door GT, scheduled to hit the road in 2026. Starting at around £100,000 without options, the car will be linked to its predecessors and the company’s racing successes through the ‘Type’ prefix. The ’00’ in the name represents its zero-emission powertrain.
Two other models will follow, all built on the new Jaguar Electrical Architecture (JEA).
Performance and Technology Derived from Formula E
Rawdon Glover, Jaguar’s Managing Director, emphasized the importance of Formula E as a platform for technology transfer. He stated that, “Unlike a lot of the other motorsport platforms, it’s a direct transfer [in Formula E], and we can take the technology directly from the racing cars, into our own road cars.” The upcoming GT will be able to travel up to 770km (478 miles) on a single charge (WLTP) and add up to 321km (200 miles) of range in just 15 minutes using a rapid charger.
Formula E racing is a testing ground for Jaguar’s road car tech. Glover added that, “Managing heat, managing efficiency, regeneration and range – these things are all super important for our road cars and Formula E is the most punishing environment feasible to develop these in.” The technology gained from Formula E, including heat management, efficiency, and regenerative braking, will be integrated into Jaguar’s production vehicles.
Design and Interior
Jaguar pledged that the car would be “a copy of nothing,” and the design delivers on that promise. The Type 00 concept defies conventional electric vehicle designs, instead, evoking classic performance cars features such as: a long bonnet, a steeply raked windscreen, a sweeping roofline, and a boat tail rear design, and hints of the legendary Jaguar E-Type.
The car features boxy arches that engulf the 23-inch alloy wheels. The rear has a glassless tailgate and horizontal taillights. Cameras take the place of a rear window, popping out of the side behind the front wheels. The exterior design aims to create a sense of awe, according to the chief exterior designer, Constantino Segui Gilabert.
Inside, butterfly doors and a pantograph tailgate open to reveal a minimalist interior. A central brass spine divides the cabin. The interior features a modern and minimalist design. Floating instrument panels, a tactile wool blend, and a Travertine stone plinth enhance the sensory experience.
Adding to the sensory experience, the Type 00 features a ‘Prism case’ that, via the placement of three totems containing natural materials (Brass, Travertine, Alabaster), allows the occupant to customize and alter the mood of the car by adapting the ambient lighting, scent, sound, and screen graphics.
The first production-ready Jaguar vehicle, heavily based on the Type 00 Vision Concept, is expected to be revealed in late 2025.
As Jaguar embarks on its all-electric future, the company will continue to compete in Formula E, with Season 11 on the horizon.
