JSW Group is making significant strides in the automotive sector with plans to launch a new electric vehicle (EV) priced around Rs 10-12 lakh. According to Parth Jindal, Managing Director of JSW Cement and JSW Paints, the company is working on an EV that will be smaller than the Windsor model. Additionally, JSW Group intends to increase its holding in JSW MG Motor India, a venture with MG.
The company is also developing a larger SUV that will be available with three drivetrain options: EV, hybrid, and internal combustion engines (ICE). Jindal revealed that JSW is collaborating with a Chinese global OEM for technology to produce JSW-badged cars, with a planned launch in the first half of 2027. The production facility for both commercial vehicles and JSW-badged passenger vehicles is being set up in Sambhajinagar.
JSW Group is investing Rs 10,000 crore in these automotive ventures through a promoter entity. The company is also focusing on improving localization, having increased the local content of the Windsor model from 27% to 67% by the end of the current year, with plans to reach 85% by mid-next year.
JSW MG Motor India has seen significant success with its EV offerings, with over 80% of its volumes being electric. The company believes it is on the verge of becoming the number one player in the EV market in India. The Windsor model, despite being priced slightly above the ideal range of Rs 10-15 lakh, has shown promising results, indicating that the right product at the right price can lead to substantial sales.
The group is also venturing into commercial vehicles through a technology and license partnership with another global OEM, with production expected to commence in the first half of the next year. Furthermore, JSW is seriously evaluating a battery project, working on securing the necessary technology.
