Kia Enters Electric Van Market in Europe
Kia has launched sales of its purpose-built electric PV5 cargo and passenger vans in Europe, marking a significant step into the commercial electric vehicle segment. The PV5 models are based on Kia’s E-GMP platform and offer competitive pricing and impressive specifications.
Key Features of Kia PV5 Vans
The PV5 cargo van is available with two battery options: a standard 51.5-kWh pack and an optional 71.2-kWh unit. The longer-range version promises up to 247 miles of range on a single charge. The cargo van offers 155 cubic feet of space and a 1,742-pound payload capacity. Pricing starts at $36,800 for the smaller battery and $40,100 for the larger one.
The PV5 passenger van will offer seating for five initially, with a seven-seat model planned for later. It features the same battery options as the cargo van, with ranges of 179 miles and 249 miles respectively. The larger battery version comes with a more powerful 120-kW motor and supports 400-volt fast-charging, reaching 80% charge in under 30 minutes. Pricing starts at $43,900.
Market Implications
While these electric vans are not headed to the US market immediately, they are coming to Canada. The decision reflects the current state of the electric minivan market in the US, which has seen limited interest so far, with Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz being the primary entry.
The Kia PV5 represents a significant development in Europe’s commercial electric vehicle segment, offering competitive pricing and impressive specifications. Its absence in the US market highlights the different pace of electric vehicle adoption between regions.
