Kia’s Electric Van Revolution: First Look at the Production PV5
The first glimpses of the production-ready Kia PV5 electric van have emerged, giving enthusiasts a preview of the brand’s entry into the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market. Teased at the 2024 IAA van show in Hannover, the PV5 marks a significant step for Kia as it expands its electric vehicle portfolio. Originally planned for 2025, its launch has been pushed back to 2026.

Design and Features
While the initial concepts showcased camera-and-screen side mirrors, the production model will feature conventional door mirrors. However, the fundamental shapes remain consistent with the concept vehicles, suggesting a design that’s very close to what was initially presented. The headlight design maintains a similar angular shape, with minor adjustments.

Warranty and Performance
Kia has announced a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty for the PV5, aligning with its passenger cars. Furthermore, the brand aims for best-in-class performance in key areas such as payload capacity and turning radius, positioning the PV5 strategically between small and medium van categories. Fast-charging capabilities will also be included, with supports up to 150kW on a DC connection and 22kW via AC.
Testing and Competition
Photographers have previously spotted the PV5 undergoing testing, often alongside its competitors, including the Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo. The presence of a Hyundai Staria in testing indicates that Kia’s “Platform Beyond Vehicle” (PBV) range will offer a more refined and tech-laden experience, including drive-by-wire steering and braking, in-wheel motors, and integrated electric features, but will also include a lower-spec model.

The Kia PBV Range
Kia’s electric van strategy, originally presented at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, plans to launch three different van models at the core of its PV range: the PV1, PV5, and PV7. The PV5, showcased in numerous configurations (high-roof, people-carrier, self-driving Robotaxi, pickup truck) is the mid-size offering. The PV1 is a smaller vehicle, intended for last-mile delivery, while the PV7 will be a larger medium van.

Kia’s PV range will encompass a wide range of vehicle types.
The PV5 is approximately 4.7 meters long. To demonstrate the flexibility of their platform, Kia showcased several versions of the vehicle, including a high-roof model for increased cargo space and a people-carrier variant with different layouts and a sliding partition between cabin and seating area.

Pricing and Timeline
The Kia PV5 is expected to be priced around 35,000 Euros (approximately £30,000). Production will begin with the PV5 in 2026, followed by the PV7 around 2027. The PV1 is planned for 2028. Kia envisions a three-phase rollout, with later phases introducing advanced technologies like increased self-driving capabilities, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence.

The PV5 can carry passengers as well as cargo.

The high roof in the cabin means there is lots of space inside.

There is a lot of potential for customisation.

The “PBV Ecosystem”
Kia is emphasizing a “PBV Ecosystem” to allow for customisation, including the incorporation of racking and storage solutions. Expect modular assembly and swappable technology to give the user the ability to customize their Kia electric vans.
The Kia PV5 represents Kia’s ambitious push to establish a foothold in the electric van segment. With its promising features, competitive pricing, and strategic approach, the PV5 will be a key player in the evolving commercial vehicle industry when it arrives in 2026.
