Kia Unveils PV5: A Flexible Electric Commercial Vehicle
Following a recent design reveal, Kia has fully unveiled the PV5, its first model in the Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) lineup. This electric light commercial vehicle is poised to challenge rivals like the VW ID. Buzz.

Versatile Configurations for Diverse Needs
The PV5 boasts a Flexible Body System, a skateboard-style architecture designed for multiple body styles. Standard configurations include Passenger, Cargo, Chassis-Cab, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), and Family models. Conversion models offer options such as Crew, Drop Side, Box Van, Freezer Box, Prime (a higher-end Passenger model), and Light Camper. The Light Camper configuration may not be available in the US market, similar to the ID. Buzz.
Compact Design and Efficient Powertrain
The PV5 measures 184.8 inches in length with a 74.6-inch wheelbase. This positions it slightly smaller than the US-spec long-wheelbase ID. Buzz. Built on Kia’s E-GMP.S (E-GMP for Service) platform, the PV5 prioritizes maximizing interior space while maintaining a compact footprint, ideal for urban environments.
The front-mounted electric motor generates 163 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Customers can choose between a 51.5-kWh or a 71.2-kWh battery pack. The larger battery offers a range of up to 249 miles on a single charge, which is slightly higher than the ID. Buzz, but may still be less for longer journeys. It’s important to note that EPA range figures tend to be more conservative than real-world performance.
Fast charging capabilities allow the PV5 to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability are also included.
Design, Interior, and Availability
Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy gives the PV5 a futuristic yet practical aesthetic. The front bumper features modular sections for more affordable repairs. LED headlights have a modern layout with higher-placed daytime running lights (DRLs) and lower main beams. The electric van will be available in various color combinations.
The interior utilizes eco-friendly and easy-to-clean materials, including thermoplastic olefin (TPO), offered in five color options. The flat floor supports a flexible 2+2+3 seating arrangement. The front passenger seat can fold flat, and the second and third-row seats are removable, enhancing versatility. The WAV version includes a belt-fastening system and a quick-access ramp capable of holding up to 661 lbs for easy wheelchair access.
The PV5 features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen powered by Android Automotive OS, providing advanced connectivity options. Features like Digital Key and app-based services are uncommon in the commercial vehicle segment.
Production of the PV5 will take place at Kia’s EVO Plant in South Korea, with initial launches in the home market and Europe. Kia hopes to expand sales to additional markets, including the US, where it will compete with the ID. Buzz in the electric van segment.
