Kia PV5: A Glimpse into the Future of Electric Commercial Vehicles
Kia is charging ahead in the electric vehicle market with the PV5, a modular electric van poised to redefine commercial transport. This innovative vehicle, showcased during Kia’s 2025 EV Day, represents the first in a series of Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) models designed for adaptability and a wide range of uses.

Kia’s PV5 isn’t just another electric van; it’s a flexible platform designed to meet diverse business needs. Initially, the PV5 will be available in three core body styles: Passenger, Cargo, and Chassis Cab. Each variant offers extensive customization options allowing businesses to tailor the vehicles to their specific requirements, thanks to the PBV’s modular design.
Core Models and Configurations
-
Passenger: This version is designed for passenger transport and comes with a three-row seating arrangement that can accommodate up to eight people in a 2-3-3 configuration. Seats can be folded down as needed to create more space.
-
Cargo: As the workhorse of the range, the Cargo variant will be offered in Standard, Long, and High-Roof configurations. The High-Roof version also comes in a Walk-Through variant and includes a roof console. With a maximum load volume of 180 cubic feet, it offers ample space for transporting goods.
-
Chassis Cab: This model gives businesses the most flexibility, with the cab from the Cargo version but without a rear body. Businesses can then customize the back of this version to their exact needs.
Versatile Design and Functionality
Based on Kia’s E-GMP.S platform—a modified version of the EV6 and EV9 underpinnings—each PVB provides a battery-powered ‘skateboard’ with ample space above for different body styles. Construction of the PV5 and its upcoming models will take place at a specialized facility using a Flexible Body System. Kia describes this approach as “assembling a puzzle,” which should allow for remarkably creative combinations.
Beyond the core models, Kia is collaborating with commercial vehicle industry experts to offer additional variants, including:
- Crew Cab
- Drop-side models
- Box Van models
- Freezer Box models
Kia has also previewed the PV5’s use as a light camper, showcasing its potential versatility.

Technology and Features
The PV5 lineup incorporates many of the interior features found in Kia’s road cars, including physical buttons, touch screens, and familiar switchgear. Commercial clients also get several useful features, including a 7-inch instrument display and a 12.9-inch navigation screen. Software allows businesses to install critical apps and monitor their fleets, thanks to Android Automotive. Partnerships with Samsung and the use of its Internet of Things (IoT) platform (SmartThings Pro) enable increased connectivity, allowing the van to control smart HVAC systems, smart signage, and other smart business devices.
Additionally, the vehicle features an AddGear accessory range, with eco-friendly materials and various exterior color options, providing additional customization.
Performance and Specifications
The PV5 is powered by a 161-horsepower motor with 184 lb-ft of torque, with power supplied by one of three battery options. Cargo PV5s can be equipped with a 43.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery or a 51.5 or 71.2 kWh lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery. The rest of the lineup is available with the high-capacity NMC packs.
It has a maximum range of 248 miles on the WLTP cycle, and with a compatible charger, it can charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.
Market Availability
Sales of the PV5 are set to begin in Korea and Europe in late 2025, with expansion into more markets in 2026. The U.S. market, however, remains uncertain due to import duties. Despite these barriers, Kia’s President and CEO, Ho Sung Song, has not ruled out the possibility of a PV5 variant eventually entering the U.S.
A Commitment to Innovation
The PV5 is just the beginning. Kia has confirmed that the PV7 and PV9 models are coming soon, along with room for smaller models in the future.

Kia has also developed a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) version of the PV5, which is specially designed to enhance accessibility for wheelchair users. It features a ramp that can support 661 lbs and is designed with wheelchair users in mind from the outset. The ramp extends to the sidewalk, a design choice that addresses many competitor models’ shortcomings. Inside, a universal wheelchair fastening system ensures the safe and secure positioning of occupants in the second row of seats, enabling the third row and front row occupants to remain in close proximity.
With its customizable options, advanced technology, and commitment to electric mobility, the Kia PV5 is positioned to make a lasting impact on the commercial vehicle sector.
