Kia has taken its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) concept to the next level with the WKNDR, a modular electric van designed specifically for camping and overlanding adventures. Unveiled at Kia’s EV Day in Barcelona, Spain, the WKNDR builds upon the PV5 model, offering four variants: Cargo, Passenger, Crew, and Wheelchair Access Vehicle.
Innovative Features
The WKNDR concept boasts several groundbreaking features, including spinning turbine-style wheels designed to capture energy from wind and water, solar panels integrated into the roof, and a rail system inside the van for efficient gear storage. These innovations are part of Kia’s exploration into the future of electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions.
Turbine Wheels
One of the most striking features of the WKNDR is its hydro turbine wheels. These are designed to generate power for the van, whether it’s moving or stationary. For example, crossing a shallow stream could turn the wheels, creating energy, while wind can also move the wheels to add power even when the van is parked. Andre Franco Luis, Kia’s Head of Future Design, was inspired by his own camping experiences, where he often encountered gusty winds between his office and favorite outdoor spots.
Modular Interior
The WKNDR is described as a ‘Swiss Army Knife on wheels,’ with a modular interior that transforms into a living space. The seats can move and convert into lounge seats or tables, while rails extend across the interior panels for gear storage. A rooftop tent equipped with solar panels adds to the van’s adventure capabilities.
Design Process
The idea for the WKNDR was pitched at the end of 2023, with the first sketches outlined in March 2024. The concept was finalized by the end of October 2024, following a period of exploration and research by Kia’s design team in California. Franco Luis encouraged his team to look beyond internet research and draw inspiration from the desert landscapes near their location.
Future Prospects
While the WKNDR is currently a concept vehicle, Kia received overwhelmingly positive feedback when it debuted at the annual SEMA show. This suggests there could be potential for the WKNDR or similar concepts to make it to production in the future. As Franco Luis notes, ‘We believe in EVs, and we want to empower our customers wherever they go.’ The WKNDR represents Kia’s commitment to innovative design and sustainable mobility solutions.
