Weight has long been a criticism leveled against electric vehicles (EVs), especially those designed with sporting intentions. Addressing this concern is the aim of Longbow, a new market entrant, with its Featherweight Electric Vehicle. This new EV will come in both Speedster and Roadster forms.
Longbow, based in the UK, was founded by three individuals with extensive experience in the automotive, technology, and finance sectors. Daniel Davey and Mark Tapscott have deep roots in the EV industry dating back to the original Tesla Roadster, a vehicle that significantly impacted the automotive world. They’ve also held prominent positions at Lucid Motors and BYD. Jenny Keisu, whose experience includes her previous role as CEO of X Shore in the electric marine industry, brings commercial and investment expertise to the team.
According to the company, Longbow’s core focus will be lightweight construction, exceptional engineering, and meticulous hand finishing. Both the Speedster and Roadster share a new bespoke platform and an all-electric drivetrain, both cars aiming to weigh in at under 995kg.
Davey stated, “Amidst the e-mobility revolution, we have lost something important. Many modern ‘sportscars’ tip the scales at 1,500kg and BEVs can reach almost double that. There is a need for a more driver-oriented, featherweight, electric sportscar – one that is attainable and accessible, for those who love driving and the places it takes them. That is why we have created Longbow. Our first two cars, Speedster and Roadster embody everything a modern driver’s car should be: agile, balanced, electric and exhilarating. We are reviving an icon, the lightweight British sportscar.”
Both the Speedster and Roadster models utilize a bespoke Longbow aluminum chassis specifically engineered for minimal weight and maximum stiffness. Although details on the powertrains and other specific features of the cars are still pending, the company has released some key specifications. The Speedster, with a target weight of just 895kg, is expected to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 3.5 seconds and offer a range of 275 miles (WLTP). It will have a starting price of £84,995 (approximately US$110,000), with plans to produce 150 vehicles. The Roadster, slightly heavier at 995kg, will be priced just under £65,000 (around US$84,100).
