Lucid Air Recall Issued Over Floor Mat Issue

Automotive recalls, ranging from minor issues to major safety concerns, are a common occurrence. While some recalls address significant problems affecting millions of vehicles, others concern less critical issues. Fortunately for owners of the Lucid Air all-electric luxury sedan, a recent recall falls into the latter category.

Lucid Air Recall: Floor Mat Problem

Lucid is recalling 4,294 copies of its electric sedan due to a problem with the all-weather floor mats. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall involves floor mats that lack anchors, specifically those with model numbers ending in “-00.” The NHTSA estimates that this issue affects 100 percent of the recalled Air sedans.

The potential problem? The floor mats could move and potentially trap the accelerator pedal, leading to unintended acceleration. This is a concern, especially for high-performance models like the Air Sapphire, with its 1,234 horsepower.

To prevent any issues, owners are instructed to remove these all-weather floor mats from their Air sedans.

Reportedly, some complaints about the floor mats moving have emerged in Europe. In addition, a U.S. customer reported that their accelerator pedal didn’t return when released, which was confirmed by vehicle telemetry data.

Lucid is not the first automaker to face this issue. Toyota experienced unintended acceleration problems around 2010 due to pedal misapplication or entrapment. Before that, Audi had the same problem in the 1980s. Fortunately, the solution for Lucid Air owners is simple: remove the problematic floor mats.

Lucid will reimburse drivers for the original cost of the components. This recall applies to Air sedans built between November 18, 2022, and December 19, 2023.

Owners of affected vehicles should watch for notices from Lucid, which are expected to be sent around May 23. For questions or concerns, contact Lucid customer service at 1-888-995-8243 or the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236. The NHTSA campaign number for this recall is 25E021000 and Lucid’s is SR-25-01-1.
