Chinese luxury electric vehicle brand Avatr is eyeing the Australian market as early as 2026, bringing its cutting-edge EVs and plug-in hybrids to challenge established players like Tesla and BYD.
The brand, backed by Chinese automaker Changan, battery giant CATL, and tech powerhouse Huawei, has been gaining attention for its blend of luxury and advanced technology. Avatr’s decision to enter Australia follows the successful launch of its mid-size electric SUV, the Avatr 11, in Thailand in late 2024.
Key Features of Avatr’s Upcoming Models
Avatr’s potential Australian lineup may include the Avatr 06 sedan and Avatr 11 SUV. The Avatr 06 boasts several innovative features, including:
- A futuristic ‘Halo’ LED display at the bottom of its windshield that can communicate with other road users
- A 35.4-inch upper display combined with a 15.6-inch lower touchscreen running Huawei’s HarmonyOS
- Range options extending up to 650km for pure electric models
- Plug-in hybrid versions offering up to 1100km of range

Challenges and Opportunities in the Australian Market
While Avatr’s entry into Australia presents exciting opportunities for local consumers, it also comes with challenges. The brand’s association with Huawei, which was banned from Australia’s 5G network construction in 2021 due to security concerns, may attract government scrutiny.
Additionally, Avatr will need to establish a dealer network, service centers, and charging infrastructure partnerships to support its vehicles in Australia. The pricing of Avatr’s vehicles in Australia remains uncertain, although in China, their products start at around $30,000.
The Australian electric vehicle market has seen significant growth, with Tesla currently leading sales and BYD rapidly gaining market share. Avatr’s entry would add another premium option for Australian car buyers, potentially shaking up the competitive landscape.
As the Australian EV market continues to evolve, Avatr’s high-tech offerings could appeal to sophisticated consumers looking for advanced technology and performance in their vehicles.
