Owning a luxury car offers undeniable cachet. These vehicles often deliver unparalleled performance, cutting-edge technology, and a level of craftsmanship that elevates driving to an art form. However, not all luxury cars are created equal. Some models come with hidden costs that can far exceed their initial price tag.
Alex Black, seasoned automotive specialist and chief marketing officer of EpicVIN, cautions buyers to consider the long-term expenses. Beyond the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), factors such as maintenance and repairs can significantly increase the total cost of ownership. “Luxury cars might be something to boast about, but few are worth their price,” Black stated.
Here are some luxury models Black advises buyers to steer clear of:
Maserati Ghibli
The Italian-made Maserati Ghibli is undeniably stylish, with features like boomerang-shaped headlights and the iconic trident on the front grille. Despite its elegant appearance, Black warns prospective buyers about reliability issues. “The parts cost an arm and a leg, and maintenance accumulates rapidly,” he explained, comparing the model to a “dressed-up version of a Chrysler” but with a luxury price point.
Range Rover
The Range Rover, a British-made original luxury SUV, is renowned for its impressive handling, even off-road. However, Black points out that older models can develop problems. He noted they are susceptible to electrical malfunctions, suspension failures, and oil leaks as they age. “Range Rovers are wonderful to drive in their prime, but their maintenance in the long term will strip your pocketbook,” he said.
BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7 Series boasts advanced technology, including LED door projectors, touchscreen controls, and an 8K resolution screen for rear passengers. However, the innovation comes at a cost according to Black. “Electronics fail, suspension deteriorates and even small jobs cost an arm and a leg,” he stated. “Post-warranty, the cost of owning a BMW 7 Series will escalate.”
Cadillac Escalade
The Cadillac Escalade, while bearing an elite badge, may not be worth the price according to Black. “It’s a Chevy Tahoe with a fancy badge, and you’re paying way more for the same platform,” he explained. The Escalade’s reliability record is not stellar, making it both a costly and underwhelming choice.
Jaguar XF
The Jaguar XF presents an enjoyable driving experience with its turbocharged four-cylinder engine, power-adjustable steering column, and digital gauge cluster. However, Black cautions that its appeal is diminished by persistent maintenance troubles. “The transmission, electric system and expensive repairs contribute to a bad buy in the long run,” he stated, making it a risky investment.
Mercedes S-Class
The Mercedes S-Class offers features like an OLED touchscreen that allows for personalized settings. However, maintenance expenses can quickly inflate the price tag of previous models. “Old S-Class models get really expensive with maintenance,” Black stated, highlighting that older models are prone to air suspension failures. Also, the complex electronics can lead to expensive repairs in the long term.
Audi A8
The Audi A8 is a spacious luxury sedan with all-wheel drive. Its all-wheel drive chassis delivers excellent handling, making it a comfortable and stylish vehicle to drive. However, Black says that the lack of reliability can make long-term ownership financially straining.
Porsche Cayenne
The Porsche Cayenne is a thrilling SUV, but early models suffer from reliability issues. “Even though it offers a wonderful driving experience, the early models of the Cayenne face engine issues, heavy maintenance bills and expensive spares,” Black said. This leads to costs that can quickly increase after the original purchase.
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is eye-catching and performs well due to its twin-turbo V-6 engine, which makes the drive enjoyable. However, Black points out that the Giulia Quadrifoglio has acquired a reputation for unreliability. “Its stunning looks and thrilling drive are spoiled by computer errors and costly repairs,” he warns.
