Luxury Car Scam in Bhubaneswar: Man Arrested for Rs 1.08 Crore Fraud
A 32-year-old man, Sambit Panda, was arrested in Bhubaneswar for allegedly duping a businessman out of Rs 1.08 crore on the pretext of providing a luxury car at a discounted rate. Panda, who worked as a car showroom manager in Cuttack and is the son of a retired police officer, claimed to be a freelance car broker and manager of an Audi car showroom in Bhubaneswar.
The accused came into contact with businessman Rohit Roshan Mohanty in March 2023 and promised to facilitate the purchase of a luxury vehicle within a month. Mohanty handed over Rs 1.08 crore to Panda in phases, but the latter failed to deliver the vehicle. When Mohanty demanded his money back, Panda allegedly threatened him and was found to have produced forged documents to deceive the victim.
Further investigation revealed that Panda had been involved in similar cheating cases in the past. Mohanty filed a complaint against Panda in court, leading to the registration of a case by the Infocity police in September last year. Although Panda secured anticipatory bail from the high court, it was not extended, resulting in his arrest on Monday.
The police investigation into the matter is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of Panda’s fraudulent activities.
