Slate, an emerging American electric vehicle manufacturer backed by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos among others, has introduced the Slate Truck, a compact electric pickup designed with customization and affordability in mind.
Key Features of the Slate Truck
The Slate Truck is designed to be compact, measuring 176 inches in length, and is priced competitively with a post-incentive target price of “under $20,000”. The base model comes with a standard 52.7-kWh battery pack, offering 150 miles of range, while an optional 84.3-kWh pack extends this to 240 miles per charge.
Minimalist Approach to Keep Costs Low
Slate adopts a minimalist approach to features, omitting bells and whistles to keep costs down. Instead of a large touchscreen display, the truck includes a smartphone dock, with an optional dedicated tablet available. Notable features include hand-cranked windows, emphasizing the vehicle’s simplicity.
Customization Options
The company plans to offer “over 100 accessories” for the Slate Truck, allowing owners to customize their vehicles. A particularly interesting accessory is the flat-pack SUV Kit, which transforms the pickup into a five-seat small SUV. This mod includes a roll cage, airbags, and rear seats, and can be installed either at a service center or by the owner themselves.
