Mercedes-AMG is no stranger to electrification, having already incorporated hybrid-electric technology into its lineup of coupes and sedans. However, a recent teaser on Instagram has sparked speculation about the brand’s foray into fully electric vehicles. The post, which featured a mysterious orange-copper-toned car with an AMG logo, hinted that “something big is right around the corner.”
This latest development builds upon years of anticipation surrounding Mercedes-AMG’s electric future. The Vision AMG concept, unveiled in 2022, showcased the brand’s vision for an all-electric vehicle, complete with a high-voltage battery and axial flux motors. Now, it appears that this concept is making its way to production.
Industry insiders suggest that the four-door AMG GT model will be replaced or complemented by an all-electric variant shortly. Teaser photos posted on Mercedes-AMG’s Facebook page in May provided a glimpse of the alleged four-door AMG GT, with a clear view of its four doors beneath the camouflage livery.
According to reports from CarScoops and Car and Driver, the new EV sedan will be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack from Sila Nanotechnologies, a U.S.-based cell provider. The vehicle is expected to be built on a dedicated platform known as the AMG.EA, which will enable rapid charging times and potentially feature axial-flux motors built by British company Yasa, acquired by Mercedes in 2021.
The Mercedes-AMG EV sedan will face stiff competition from established rivals such as the Porsche Taycan, Audi RS E-Tron GT, and BMW i5 M60. While pricing, power figures, and production details remain under wraps, we can expect updates as more information becomes available.
