Mercedes-Benz has announced the reintroduction of the entry-level GLC 200 variant for the Australian market, significantly reducing the starting price of its best-selling model. This move sees the price of the GLC range drop by $14,400, making it more accessible to buyers.
Pricing and Comparison
For a limited time, the GLC range now starts at $89,000 (before on-road costs) or $95,500 (national drive-away). Previously, the entry-level was the GLC 300, which had a starting price of $103,400 (before on-road costs). This positions the GLC 200 slightly above the new BMW X3, which begins at $86,100 (before on-road costs), by $2900.
While the updated Audi Q5 is anticipated to exceed the $80,000 mark, its precise local pricing remains unconfirmed.
Performance and Features
The GLC 200’s power is derived from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, delivering 150kW and 320Nm to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Compared to the GLC 300 4MATIC, this is a decrease of 40kW and 80Nm. However, it offers a 10kW and 10Nm increase over the X3, and is expected to produce 10kW and 100Nm less than the petrol-powered Audi Q5 TFSI entry grade.
A 48-volt mild-hybrid system aids in fuel efficiency, with consumption dropping to 7.5 litres/100km under the NEDC cycle, matching the X3. The GLC 200 boasts a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.8 seconds, which is 0.7 seconds faster than the X3, thanks to a new Integrated Starter Generator.
Design-wise, the GLC 200 features exclusive 19-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels in Tremolite Grey with a high-sheen finish. It also includes removable aluminium-look running boards with rubber studs and “high-performance” LED headlights with adaptive high beam assist. Other features include a panoramic sliding sunroof with heat-insulated dark-tinted glass and aluminium roof rails.
Inside, the cabin gets a silver-grey diamond-pattern and high-gloss black trims on the dashboard and center console. It is equipped with an 11.9-inch multimedia display offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display. Standard features also encompass wireless charging, interior ambient lighting, a leather steering wheel, synthetic leather seats, dual-zone climate control, branded metal door sills, and puddle lights.
Safety and Customization
Standard safety features include nine airbags, lane-keep assist, blind-spot assist, traffic sign assist, and a surround-view camera. Customers can further personalize their vehicle with the optional interior Plus Package, AMG-inspired Sport Package, and exterior Night Package, the latter of which must be bought in conjunction with the Sport Package. Five metallic paint options are available, and can be chosen in Obsidian Black, High-tech Silver, Spectral Blue, Graphite Grey, and Verde Silver, with three premium paint options – Opalite White, Alpine Grey, or Patagonia Red.
