Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall for specific models of its current-generation S-Class, including the ultra-luxury Maybach variants, due to a potential issue with the front brake hoses. This defect could lead to a brake fluid leak, which in turn might lengthen stopping distances and heighten the risk of a collision.
The recall impacts certain S-Class vehicles from the 2021 to 2023 model years. The affected models include the S 500, S 580, S 580e, as well as the Maybach S 580 and Maybach S 680. A total of 20,339 vehicles across the United States are subject to this recall.
According to the recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on February 24 (recall campaign number 25V116000), the front brake hoses on these vehicles may rupture and leak brake fluid. This issue is considered more likely in vehicles operating in hot and humid environments.
Mercedes-Benz indicated that it became aware of the problem in late 2023 following individual reports. However, the automaker reported that it has no knowledge of any accidents or injuries attributable to this defect.
The remedy for this issue involves dealers replacing the front brake hoses. This service will be provided at no cost to the vehicle owners. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail, beginning on April 25.
