Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to launch a new generation of vans, with the first models expected to arrive starting in 2026. The automaker has released photos of camouflaged prototypes undergoing cold-weather testing in northern Sweden. A major shift from the current Sprinter and V-Class vans involves adopting a shared, flexible platform.
On Friday, Mercedes announced the new platform will accommodate both electric and internal-combustion powertrains, designated as Van.EA and Van.CA, respectively. This change of course comes after Mercedes originally planned to transition entirely to electric vans. The automaker revised its strategy last year, now planning to continue selling combustion-engine vehicles well into the next decade.
The initial van built on this platform will be a midsize model. This new midsize van will likely replace the V-Class, which is currently sold overseas. Also, the current V-Class also serves as the foundation for the Vito commercial van—briefly sold in the U.S. as the Metris—as well as the EQV electric van.
Mercedes confirmed the electric version of the upcoming midsize van will launch first, with a preview arriving this spring in the form of the Vision V concept. In addition, The luxury version of the new van, expected to retain the V-Class nameplate, is confirmed for the U.S. market, though precise launch timing remains uncertain. A related commercial version is also in the works and may retain the Vito nameplate. However, it’s uncertain if this model will be offered in the U.S., given the high demand for the locally built Sprinter van. The new van platform is designed with three modules, making it adaptable for various sizes of vehicles. Mercedes also stated that the platform allows for greater differentiation between luxury and commercial models than previously.
Furthermore, the platform will serve as the foundation for the next-generation Sprinter. While a luxury version of Mercedes’ full-size van isn’t expected, the automaker has indicated a possibility of camper variants being developed.
