Mitsubishi and Nissan Swap Electric Vehicles in US Market Deal

Mitsubishi and Nissan are set to strengthen their Alliance partnership by exchanging key electric vehicle models in the US market. Mitsubishi will sell the third-generation Nissan Leaf electric car, while Nissan will gain access to the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the US.

    Model Exchange Details

The model trade, which will commence next year, is currently limited to the US market. Mitsubishi has hinted at a potential expansion into Australia and other markets for the rebadged Leaf. However, Mitsubishi Australia has confirmed plans to introduce a Foxtron-sourced electric vehicle for the local market, which could compete with the Nissan-sourced model.

    US Market Focus

The decision to focus on the US market initially is significant as both brands look to bolster their electric vehicle offerings. The Outlander PHEV technology will be supplied by Mitsubishi to Nissan for the North American market starting in 2026. This move will give Nissan’s Rogue model – known as the X-Trail in other markets – a PHEV option to compete against popular models like the Toyota RAV4.

    Technological Collaboration

Mitsubishi will leverage its expertise in PHEV technology to supply an OEM model to Nissan. This collaboration extends beyond the current model trade, with Mitsubishi exploring ways to strengthen its partnership with Nissan. The potential for further collaboration, including a rebadged Nissan Ariya, is being considered to enhance Mitsubishi’s electrified vehicle lineup and accelerate efforts towards achieving carbon neutrality.

    Market Implications

The model exchange is a strategic response to the evolving electric vehicle market. As EV sales plateau in some regions, Nissan is looking to expand its hybrid offerings in the US. The introduction of PHEV technology in the Rogue/X-Trail model will provide consumers with more options, potentially boosting sales for Nissan in a competitive market.

The partnership between Mitsubishi and Nissan highlights the ongoing shifts in the automotive industry towards electrification and collaboration. As the market continues to evolve, such strategic alliances are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the future of electric and hybrid vehicle offerings.
