The debut of an electric vehicle (EV) pace car at the 2025 Daytona 500 marks a pivotal moment, showcasing the potential of EVs in high-performance racing. This groundbreaking step reflects a shared vision for sustainability.
High-Performance Electric Innovation
The EV prototype, developed by NASCAR and ABB, is more than just a concept car. This vehicle delivers over 1300 horsepower and has exceptional acceleration, matching the performance of traditional race cars. The chassis is a modified design that allows for optimal battery placement and efficiency.
A Strategic Partnership
The ABB NASCAR Electrification Innovation Partnership, established in 2024, strengthens the commitment to high-performance electric racing. ABB, a founding member of NASCAR IMPACT, is working to advance EV technology across the sport.
Eric Nyquist, NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief IMPACT Officer, highlighted the significance: “ABB is an industry leader and will help in efforts to decarbonise our operations as we pursue achieving net-zero operating emissions over the next decade.”
NASCAR IMPACT: Racing Towards Sustainability
NASCAR IMPACT outlines the organization’s plans to reduce its environmental footprint. The goal is to reach net-zero operating emissions by 2035. Key initiatives include:
- Transitioning core operations to electric power.
- Sourcing 100% renewable energy for NASCAR facilities by 2028.
- Expanding waste diversion programs.
- Installing EV charging stations to support teams and fans.
ABB provides the expertise, equipment, and strategic guidance to achieve these goals, electrifying key aspects of NASCAR’s operations.
ABB’s Legacy in Electric Racing
ABB’s involvement in motorsport isn’t new. Since 2018, the company has been the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Bringing this legacy to NASCAR accelerates the transition to a more sustainable future.
Morten Wierod, CEO at ABB, shared his optimism: “We are very proud to be working with NASCAR to decarbonise its operations as it seeks to achieve net-zero operating emissions by 2035. With our electrification and automation solutions, we will help NASCAR outrun – leaner and cleaner.”
The Future of NASCAR
While fully electric NASCAR races might not happen tomorrow, the introduction of an electric pace car at the Daytona 500 is a crucial step. As technology advances and the audience embraces change, electric racing is becoming a real possibility.
The partnership between ABB and NASCAR signifies a turning point. With ABB’s technical prowess and NASCAR’s drive for innovation, the future of motorsport looks undeniably electric.
