NASCAR has taken a significant step towards its sustainability goals by installing 30 level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at its Daytona Beach headquarters. This initiative is part of NASCAR’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint to zero by 2035 through its NASCAR IMPACT program. The chargers, provided by Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) EVolution commercial charging solutions and ABB, will be available for both employee and industry use, facilitating NASCAR’s transition to electric fleet vehicles.
“NASCAR has made material commitments to sustainable operations across its entire business,” said Riley Nelson, Head of Sustainability at NASCAR. “FPL and ABB will provide NASCAR with valuable guidance, reliable equipment, and the support needed to electrify key elements of our operation.”
The installation of EV chargers is a critical element of NASCAR’s sustainability strategy, as it moves from scope 1 (fuel burned) to scope 2 (electric) emissions. “NASCAR is leading the way on electrification, and Daytona is another significant step forward,” said John Stahlbusch, Vice President of Sales, North America at ABB E-mobility. “Electrifying real estate like parking at NASCAR headquarters puts these assets to work, accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility.”
This initiative is part of a broader partnership between NASCAR and ABB, known as the ABB NASCAR Electrification Partnership, which explores opportunities for electrification throughout the sport, including race vehicles, charging infrastructure, and energy education. FPL provided the level 2 chargers through its tailored FPL EVolution commercial charging solutions, helping NASCAR add 30 EV charging ports to its facility.
The NASCAR IMPACT program encompasses various sustainability initiatives, including the exploration of sustainable racing fuels, expanded recycling programs at tracks, and energy-efficient technologies at facilities. These efforts reflect NASCAR’s long-term vision to make motorsports more environmentally sustainable.
