The Changing Car Market and the Motability Scheme
The car market has seen significant shifts in recent years, creating new considerations for those using the Motability Scheme.
Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on electric vehicles (EVs) to meet new regulations. This shift means fewer petrol and diesel cars are available, leading to increased costs. Raw material price increases have also contributed to higher build costs, affecting all fuel types.
Fortunately, delivery times have generally improved compared to the past few years. However, some models may still experience longer wait times, depending on the make and model.
What it Means for the Motability Scheme
The reduced availability of petrol and diesel cars has made them more expensive. As a result, you might notice higher Advance Payments on some vehicles within the Scheme.
Other lease package costs, such as tyres, insurance, and repairs, have also risen, impacting Advance Payments. Despite these challenges, the Motability Scheme still strives to provide excellent value, remaining cheaper than alternatives on average. It also offers a wide array of vehicles with a comprehensive lease package.
To find the latest prices, utilize the ‘Find a vehicle’ tool to access the most current car information. This is available from your online Motability Scheme account, and allows you to compare cars and explore new options.
Starting Your Search
For new customers joining the Scheme, begin the application process online within your Motability Scheme account to give your dealer extra time to help you choose the right car.
If you are looking to place your first car on the Scheme, start your search as soon as you can. Delivery times vary, so speak to a few dealers. Existing customers can order a new car three months before their lease ends.
Test Drives
A test drive is always recommended before ordering. Contact multiple dealers as they may have different models available. If a test drive is not feasible, ensure the vehicle has ample space for you and any passengers. Verify it is user-friendly and addresses your mobility requirements for the next three years.
Vehicle Availability & Lease Options
If your desired car isn’t on the Scheme, consider alternative vehicles that meet your needs using the ‘Find a vehicle’ tool and advanced filters. For low mileage or significant adaptations, you might extend your lease for up to two more years.
Extending Your Lease
Customers with low mileage or substantial vehicle adaptations might be eligible to extend their lease for up to two years. You retain the benefits of your worry-free lease package during the extension. You can order a new vehicle at any time during an extension.
Insurance, Maintenance, and MOT
Your car insurance and routine maintenance, including tyre repair and replacement, continue during a lease extension. Your RAC breakdown cover also extends, providing consistent support.
If you extend your lease, you may need to renew your MOT. The cost of your MOT is within your package.
Order Updates and Changes
Track your order’s progress in your Motability Scheme online account under ‘New Car Application.’ Communicate any specific questions with your dealer.
Advance Payments are usually updated every quarter. The price at the time of your application is locked in, even if it changes before delivery.
It’s possible that delivery dates may shift. Dealers depend on manufacturer updates, and adjustments can happen. Existing customers will have their lease extended if delivery is delayed.
Consult your dealer directly if you wish to cancel or change your order. Assess the timescales for any replacement car you’re considering.
Charitable Grants
Motability Foundation grant awards follow established policies and are based on your application. Grant awards can only be increased in exceptional circumstances to expedite vehicle delivery.
Your grant letter lists the vehicles or categories that Motability Foundation will fund. Ordering a car through Motability (with or without a grant) involves similar delivery times. Grant applications take up to four weeks to process.
Finding a Dealer
With over 4,500 Motability dealerships, each has specialists who can give advice. Use the ‘Find a Dealer’ tool to locate your local dealers.
