Kia Launches New PV5 WAV to Address Electric Vehicle Accessibility Gap
The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) has largely excluded drivers who need wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), as traditional converters struggle to adapt to new electric platforms. Kia is stepping into this emerging market with a WAV version of its new PV5 MPV.
Converting electric vehicles into WAVs poses significant technical challenges, particularly when modifying battery packs and floorpans. These changes conflict with strict regulations regarding crash testing and fire resistance, creating barriers for independent WAV converters. Larger electric vans like the Kia PV5 have an advantage as they offer sufficient headroom for wheelchair users without requiring major modifications.

Kia has unveiled details of its PV5 WAV, designed to “address challenges faced by wheelchair users, their families, care-givers and drivers”. The company plans to make the PV5 WAV available in the UK in 2026, although pricing details are not yet available. Key features include:
- Built-in 300kg-rated side-loading ramps for pavement access
- Specially developed wheelchair-anchoring system
- Third-row seat enabling care-givers to assist wheelchair users from the side

As the sector grows while facing the phase-out of internal combustion engine vehicles typically used for conversions, introducing eWAV options becomes crucial. Kia’s initiative marks a significant step towards making electric vehicles more accessible to wheelchair users.
