Introduction of Slate Auto’s New Electric Truck and SUV
Slate Auto, a new start-up automotive company, has unveiled its first vehicles: a mini truck and SUV designed with affordability and simplicity in mind. The company promises a starting price “under $20,000 after federal incentives,” making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Key Specifications of the Slate Truck
The Slate truck is a compact, two-door regular cab pickup with seating for two. It features a 5-foot cargo bed with a volume of 37 cu-ft, exceeding the Ford Maverick’s bed volume by 3.7 cu-ft. The truck is equipped with a single 201 horsepower electric motor integrated into a De Dion axle rear suspension and comes only with rear-wheel drive. It weighs approximately 3,600 lbs and has a maximum payload capacity of 1,433 lbs, comparable to the Ford Maverick.
Versatility and Conversion Capability
One of the Slate truck’s unique features is its ability to be converted into a five-person SUV, resembling a mini Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco. This versatility adds to its appeal for various users.
Battery and Charging Options
The Slate truck is available with two battery size options: 52.7 kWh and an optional 84.3 kWh accessory battery. The company estimates a driving efficiency of 2.85 mi/kWh, resulting in a range of 150 miles or 240 miles depending on the battery size. It supports Level 1, 2, and 3 fast charging via a NACS plug, with a DC fast charging rate of up to 120 kW. Slate claims that 20-80% of the battery can be replenished in about 30 minutes.
Production Plans and Market Focus
Slate Auto plans to produce the Blank Slate truck in the United States, with production expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. The vehicle is designed for city commuting and working, rather than cross-country travel.
