Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce an ultra-luxurious version of its next-generation V-Class MPV, badged VLS, which will offer a level of luxury comparable to the S-Class limousine but in a more spacious interior. The new model, previewed by the Vision V-Class concept at the Shanghai motor show, is designed to provide luxury car buyers with a ‘third space’ – a term used to describe a luxurious environment that feels like a personal space, akin to being at home or in a first-class airline seat.
Key Features of the VLS
According to Mercedes design boss Gordon Wagener, the VLS will be “an S-Class van” that expands Stuttgart’s luxury car market coverage, following the GLS SUV and CLS four-door coupe. The VLS name suggests S-Class-like transportation, potentially offering even more luxury than an S-Class due to its larger interior. Wagener explained that the MPV’s spacious cabin allows for features like first-class airplane-style seats that recline or can be used for sleeping, and a passenger compartment that can be isolated with a big-screen monitor, creating a luxurious, private space.
Market Positioning and Competition
The new VLS is expected to launch next year with a price tag approaching £100,000. It will significantly surpass the current premium high-spec version of the V-Class in terms of equipment and luxury features. While details about powertrains and specifications are not yet confirmed, the new generation V-Class will be based on Mercedes’ new Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) platform, with petrol and electric options expected to be carried over.
Standard Version and Future Plans
The standard version of the new V-Class will be badged VLE, though specific details about its features and powertrains have not been released. Wagener also hinted at the possibility of a Maybach version of the V-Class in the future, given Maybach’s history of emphasizing space and first-class seating.

As Mercedes continues to expand its luxury offerings, the VLS is poised to become a significant player in the high-end MPV market, offering a unique blend of luxury, space, and comfort that is hard to find in traditional sedans or SUVs.
