The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began a preliminary investigation on March 21 into nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickups from the 2015-2017 model years. These trucks are equipped with 6-speed automatic transmissions.
The probe was initiated due to 138 customer complaints. These complaints allege unexpected downshifts at highway speeds without driver input. Instances of rear-wheel lockup, skidding, and loss of vehicle control have been reported.
The purpose of the investigation is to determine the scope and seriousness of the possible safety issue. The NHTSA typically aims to conclude its investigations within eight months. If a safety risk is found, Ford may be required to recall the F-150 models.
This investigation follows a major recall from June 2024, where Ford addressed a similar transmission issue in over 550,000 model year 2014 F-150s. The 2014 recall was prompted by an intermittent loss of signal between the transmission speed sensor and the powertrain control module. This issue could cause a sudden downshift into first gear regardless of vehicle speed.
Prior to the 2014 recall, Ford was aware of approximately 300 warranty reports, 96 field reports and 124 customer formal complaints. These were related to unexpected downshifting issues. The NHTSA reported that approximately 40 incidents involved rear wheel lock-up and/or loss of vehicle control. Ford attributed the problem to the electrical issue. The repair included updates to the powertrain control module calibrations on the vehicles.
Ford has issued 29 recalls this year as of late March, according to the NHTSA. In February, a recall included up to 240,510 model year 2020-2021 Explorer SUVs and Lincoln Aviators. These recalls addressed improperly secured front seat belt buckle anchor bolts and second-row seat retractor bolts.
The 29 recalls issued by Ford this year is consistent with multiple other recalls in 2024. Last year, the automaker issued a total of 67 recalls, according to the NHTSA. This placed the company second behind Stellantis North America’s 72 recalls.
