Nigeria Unveils Africa’s Largest Electric Vehicle Charging Station
Nigeria has launched Africa’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Abuja, representing a significant stride in the nation’s commitment to sustainable transportation. The project, which includes locally assembled charging infrastructure, is designed to foster domestic EV production and lessening reliance on fossil fuels, according to DNE Africa, a partner of TV BRICS.

The opening ceremony showcased electric buses and taxis manufactured in Nigeria, highlighting the government’s efforts to modernize the automotive industry and reduce emissions. The initiative aligns with the National Automotive Industry Development Plan, which aims to boost car production to 1 million units annually, increase local production to 40%, and generate 200,000 jobs.
Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, John Uwan-Enoh, emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that 30% of all vehicles produced in Nigeria are electric. The transition to EVs is expected to require further investment in renewable energy sources and the expansion of charging station infrastructure.
Alexandre Silveira, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, commented on the expansion of the BRICS group, stating, “The enlargement of the group shows our relevance and calls on us to strengthen the Global South. This requires better governance of energy cooperation to be more inclusive and sustainable. We need to coordinate our actions and ensure that the integration of new members strengthens our capabilities and empowers us.”
Andrew Whitfield, South African Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, said, “Through our G20 presidency, South Africa is committed to advancing global cooperation and building strong partnerships that will drive growth and development for all.”
Dmitry Vakhrukov, Russian Deputy Minister of Economic Development, stated, “In general, we are moving towards achieving this goal: last year the number of foreign guests increased by more than a third. The measures that have been launched over the past two years are paying off.”
Vladimir Putin, Russian President, added, “BRICS countries and those states that wish to participate in our association, understand the benefit of adding potentials, in recent years act as leaders of global growth.”
