Tragic Road Accident Claims Nine Lives in Pune District
A devastating road accident occurred on Wednesday evening on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune district, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including a six-year-old child. Two others sustained serious injuries in the crash.
The incident took place near the Kirloskar company, in front of Shree Ram Dhaba, when a speeding car traveling from Jejuri towards Baramati lost control and rammed into a stationary pickup mini truck that was parked on the roadside for unloading electronic equipment, including a refrigerator. The impact was so severe that the car then collided with another vehicle parked nearby, causing the pickup vehicle to overturn.
According to the Pune rural police, the victims included four people traveling in the car, two from the mini truck, a hotel owner who was helping to unload goods, and two bystanders near the pickup. The six-year-old child, who was traveling in the car, succumbed to injuries during treatment.
The deceased were identified as Somnath Ramchandra Wayse, Ramu Sanjivan Yadav from Nazare in Purandar, Ajaykumar Chavan from Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, Ajit Ashok Jadhav from Kanjale in Bhor, Kiran Bharat Raut from Pawarwadi in Indapur, Ashwini Santosh Aisar from Nangnapur in Solapur, Akshay Shankar Raut from Zhargadwai in Baramati, Sarthak Kiran Raut (the six-year-old child), and one unidentified person.
Preliminary reports suggest that the car driver may have suffered a sudden health issue, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Tanaji Barade, deputy superintendent of police overseeing the investigation, stated, “Prima facie, it seems that the car was speeding and the driver might have lost control. However, the exact reason will be determined only after investigation.”
Deepak Waghchaure, assistant inspector at Jejuri Police Station and one of the first responders, described the scene: “Three persons from the car and five associated with the pickup died in the accident. The remaining were hotel staff who were helping to unload goods from the truck.”
The injured were immediately taken to Jejuri Rural Hospital, with plans to transfer them to better-equipped medical centers if necessary. The Jejuri police and rescue teams initiated relief and recovery operations, removing the damaged vehicles to restore traffic.
The investigation is ongoing, with police collecting statements from eyewitnesses and examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments to determine the exact cause and speed of the car involved. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and avoid speeding, particularly on narrow rural roads where roadside activity is frequent.
The tragic accident has sent shockwaves across the region, particularly in the local communities of Purandar, Indapur, and Baramati, from where several of the deceased hailed.
