On March 20, 2025, an Ottawa resident was charged with impaired driving after a close call with an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) cruiser in Elliot Lake.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., officers from the East Algoma Detachment of the OPP were on Highway 108, traveling northbound in a fully marked cruiser. As the officers approached the traffic lights at Highway 108 and Hillside Drive South and entered the left-turning lane, a red pickup truck turning right from Hillside Drive South nearly collided with the cruiser.
Police initiated a traffic stop on Highway 108 north. During the stop, after speaking with the driver, police determined alcohol had been consumed, and the driver was arrested. Paul Landry, a 58-year-old from Ottawa, was charged with:
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Operation while impaired – alcohol
- Turn – not in safety
Landry is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on April 10, 2025. The driver was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension.
The OPP reminds the public to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911. “MAKE THE CALL,” the police urged.
