Fatal Crash on Loudoun County Highway Ramp
Loudoun County, VA – A fatal crash on a Loudoun County highway ramp resulted in one death and one serious injury, Virginia State Police reported. The incident occurred on the morning of Thursday, March 27.
The crash happened just before 7:50 a.m. on the off-ramp from Route 267 eastbound (Dulles Greenway) to Route 28 southbound. A 2020 Chevrolet Silverado exiting Route 267 veered off the right side of the ramp and struck the rear of a 2017 Volvo 718 tractor-trailer that was stopped on the shoulder, police said.
Julio A. Portillo Pena, 41, of Gaithersburg, was a passenger in the Silverado and died at the scene. Authorities confirmed he was not wearing a seatbelt.
Another passenger, 43-year-old Almir Sanchez Valdes, also of Gaithersburg, sustained serious injuries. Police noted that Valdes was also not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Silverado, 22-year-old Exar A. Sanchez, suffered minor injuries but was wearing a seatbelt. He has been charged with failure to maintain proper control, according to state police. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Gennadiyovych N. Sergiy, 59, of Palm Coast, Florida, was uninjured and wearing a seatbelt. He has been charged with improper stopping on the highway.
The crash remains under investigation.
