Petaluma Police Investigate Altercation Between Protesters and Pickup Truck
Petaluma police are investigating an incident that occurred during Saturday’s ‘No Kings’ demonstration in town, involving a pickup truck and protesters. The demonstration, which drew hundreds of participants, remained peaceful for most of the day, according to the police department.
The incident took place at the intersection of Western Avenue and Petaluma Boulevard South when a group of protesters entered the crosswalk while the traffic signal displayed a green light for vehicles. A pickup truck proceeded through the intersection, resulting in a situation that sparked strong concern in the community, the Petaluma Police Department said in a statement.
According to a witness’s Facebook post, the pickup truck allegedly ‘plowed into’ the protesters. However, no injuries were reported, and the driver involved reported the incident to the police and is cooperating with the investigation.
Investigators are reviewing video footage and witness accounts to determine if any illegal activity occurred. The police department emphasized that drivers are legally obligated to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, even when they have a green light. ‘Driving toward pedestrians, particularly families with children, is dangerous and may violate multiple sections of the California Vehicle Code,’ the Petaluma Police stated.
The department also noted that pedestrians have a responsibility to cross streets lawfully and avoid walking against traffic signals, especially outside designated crosswalks.
