A devastating crash occurred in Johnston County early Monday morning when a pickup truck veered off N.C. Highway 96 North and crashed into a single-story brick home near Old Murphy Road, north of Selma. The incident was reported around 1 a.m., and according to the State Highway Patrol, the driver of the red pickup truck lost control of the vehicle. The truck slammed into the front of the house, specifically hitting a teenager’s bedroom. Fortunately, the teenager was not home at the time but returned to find the extensive damage. The State Highway Patrol confirmed that while there were other occupants in the house during the crash, they escaped without injuries. The driver, however, was transported to WakeMed with minor injuries. Charges are pending against the driver for DWI, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane control, and driving with an open container. A Johnston County building inspector deemed the home unsafe due to the severity of the damage. The brick veneer on the house was broken and pushed away from the foundation on at least two sides, highlighting the force of the impact. Video footage from WRAL News showed the dramatic extent of the destruction, leaving the home uninhabitable.
