A tragic collision occurred near Yellowstone National Park last week when a Dodge Ram pickup truck crossed the center line on U.S. Highway 20 and struck a Mercedes passenger van, resulting in seven fatalities. According to a statement released by Idaho State Police on Tuesday, investigating troopers determined that the pickup truck’s deviation into oncoming traffic led to the devastating crash.
The incident involved a group of Chinese tourists and an Italian tourist on board the van, according to police. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Isai Moroni, 28, of Humble, Texas, was among those injured in the crash. The state park where the accident occurred is roughly 30 miles west of Yellowstone National Park.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash that led to the driver veering into oncoming traffic. Video footage from the scene showed clear weather conditions at the time of the accident. Both vehicles caught fire following the collision, according to police reports.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to identify all parties involved and determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The National Transportation Safety Board is also conducting an independent investigation, with personnel visiting the scene to review evidence and gather more information about the crash.
