A devastating collision near Yellowstone National Park last week claimed seven lives after a pickup truck crossed the centerline of U.S. Highway 20 and struck a tour van, according to an Idaho State Police investigation. The crash occurred Thursday evening near Henry’s Lake State Park in eastern Idaho, about 16 miles west of Yellowstone’s entrance.
The Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 25-year-old Isaih Moreno from Humble, Texas, was traveling west when it veered into the eastbound lane and collided with a Mercedes passenger van carrying 13 people – 12 Chinese tourists, one Italian tourist, and their driver. The impact and subsequent fire resulted in the deaths of five Chinese tourists, the Italian tourist, and Moreno. The van’s driver and eight other passengers were injured.
Investigators found that clear weather conditions prevailed at the time of the crash. Both vehicles caught fire upon impact, complicating identification efforts. DNA testing will be required to identify some of the victims, police stated.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an independent investigation due to the severity of the crash and the involvement of a commercial vehicle. NTSB personnel have examined the scene and are reviewing evidence.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of national parks like Yellowstone, which attract international visitors. According to recent data from the International Trade Administration, 36% of international air travelers to the U.S. list visiting national parks and monuments as their primary leisure activity.
The investigation into the cause of the pickup truck crossing the centerline is ongoing.
