Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Interstate 70 in Mount Airy, Maryland, on Saturday night. Just before midnight, someone in another vehicle opened fire into a pickup truck traveling on eastbound I-70 near Route 27. The truck contained six men who had just left a party at the Frederick Fairgrounds.
Eduardo Urrea, 20, was killed in the shooting. The driver of the truck was seriously injured but managed to drive off the highway and stop near a gas station, where he called for help. He was taken to the hospital, and another man was treated on the scene for injuries. No one else was hurt.
“At this point, we do not have any suspects,” said Elena Russo, a spokesperson for the Maryland State Police. “We are looking really for any witness information because that could be critical to our investigators on the homicide unit in solving this crime.”
The motive behind the shooting is unclear, with police considering the possibility that it may have been a random act, such as road rage, or targeted after an incident at the party the victims had attended. With no description of the suspect vehicle or individuals, authorities are relying on the public for information.
Anyone who was traveling on I-70 between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Saturday night and may have dashcam footage or noticed a vehicle near the GMC pickup truck is urged to come forward. “I-70 is a busy interstate, so if anybody was traveling… may have had a dash cam, may have noticed something — even a description of a vehicle that would have been near this GMC pickup truck — that information would also be helpful to investigators,” Russo said.
Those with information or video are asked to contact the Maryland State Police Barracks in Frederick at 301-600-4150.
