Ram 1500 Gains Power with New Hurricane Engine
The Ram 1500 pickup truck in New Zealand is getting a major powertrain upgrade. Replacing the previous 5.7-litre Hemi V8 engine is a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, dubbed the ‘Hurricane’. This change brings significant improvements in power and performance.

Two versions of the Hurricane engine will be available. The 1500 Laramie Sport, priced at $164,990, features a standard output (SO) version with 313kW of power and 635Nm of torque. Todd Groves, general sales manager of Ram Trucks New Zealand, noted the SO Hurricane provides 7.6% more power and 14.2% more torque than the outgoing V8.
The higher-spec 1500 Limited model, at $185,990, receives a high output (HO) engine, producing 403kW and 707Nm. That’s a substantial increase of 38.5% for horsepower and 27.2% for torque compared to the Hemi.
According to Groves, “While the iconic 5.7-litre Hemi V8 has won fans all over NZ with its iconic sound, the all-new Ram 1500 with the Hurricane engine brings more power, torque and performance to the Ram Trucks line-up.” The new engine also offers improved drivability. “With 90% of the torque available from just 2,350rpm it also brings a smoother and more refined drive than we have ever experienced before.”

Beyond the engine, the 1500 models receive some new features. The Laramie Sport boasts redesigned LED headlights and taillights, a new front fascia, a 14.4-inch infotainment screen with a 10.25-inch front-passenger display (including mirror capabilities), dual wireless phone charging, and a power tailgate which operates both up and down.
The Limited model adds unique lighting animations, proximity lighting at night, a 125-litre fuel tank, and massaging seats, further enhancing the luxury experience.
