The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into whether previous recalls of over a million Ram pickups sufficiently addressed a critical safety issue. The defect in question allows vehicles to be shifted out of park without the brake pedal being pressed or a key being present in the ignition.

According to an NHTSA notice, the agency received 20 reports suggesting that the recall fixes implemented earlier were inadequate. These reports included six incidents resulting in seven injuries and 12 cases involving either a crash or fire.

The NHTSA’s investigation aims to determine whether the measures taken during the previous recalls were enough to rectify the problem. The safety issue at hand poses a significant risk as it could lead to trucks rolling away unexpectedly, potentially causing accidents and injuries.
