Renault Explores Technology Sharing to Boost Affordable Electric Vehicles
Renault’s CEO, Luca De Meo, has expressed the company’s willingness to share technology with other carmakers to increase production volumes and reduce manufacturing costs. Speaking at a parliamentary hearing in Rome, De Meo emphasized the potential benefits of collaboration, particularly in the areas of small cars and commercial vehicles.

De Meo mentioned that Renault had previously engaged in discussions with Volkswagen about jointly developing an affordable electric version of the Renault Twingo. Although these talks ended after a few months when Volkswagen withdrew, De Meo stressed that Renault remains open to future collaborations.
“We remain fully open,” De Meo stated, highlighting the potential for shared technologies, including platforms that can support multiple models, to be particularly beneficial in the small car and commercial vehicle segments. These areas typically require significant investments while offering slim profit margins.
The CEO’s comments come after Renault and Stellantis Chairman John Elkann discussed the challenges facing the industry. De Meo noted that between 2015 and 2030, regulatory requirements are expected to increase the cost of a medium-sized Renault car by 20% and small cars by 40%, further emphasizing the need for cost-effective solutions through technology sharing.
Renault has a history of collaborating with other manufacturers, including Mercedes and Fiat, in specific market areas. The company’s willingness to share technology could potentially lead to more affordable electric vehicles in the future.
