Renault Unveils the All-Electric 5 Turbo 3E
The Renault 5 Turbo 2, a legendary vehicle from an era when hot hatchbacks were at their peak, has inspired a sequel. Renault has debuted the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, an all-electric, 540-horsepower hot hatch slated for limited production in 2027.
Renault plans to produce only 1,980 units of the 5 Turbo 3E, which it calls the first “mini-supercar.” While the very notion of a mini-supercar might be news to some, the 5 Turbo 3E boasts the kind of features certain enthusiasts have been requesting in an all-electric vehicle. The car’s in-wheel motors generate 540 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in under 3.5 seconds.
The 5 Turbo 3E is compact and broad: roughly 13.4 feet long and 6.7 feet wide. Its design also prioritizes aerodynamics for both cornering downforce and effective weight distribution.
With its two doors and seating for two, the model houses its battery beneath the floor. Weighing less than 3,200 pounds, the car uses carbon fiber in various areas to keep the weight down. The 800-volt architecture allows the battery to recharge from 15 percent to 80 percent in just 15 minutes.
The 5 Turbo 3E’s performance specifications suggest it can complete “several” hot laps on the track at speeds up to 167 mph. Although Renault has not announced a price, it’s expected to be over €100,000 (approximately $110,000). The car is slated for sale in Europe, Australia, the Middle East, and Japan, but not in the U.S.
When delivered, the 5 Turbo 3E must live up to its predecessor’s legacy. The Renault 5 Turbo 2 is one of the most collectible cars built since 1980. The 5 Turbo 2 was a hot hatchback built during an era when models like the Peugeot 205 GTi and the Volkswagen Golf GTI were popular.
