Rivian Expands Electric Delivery Van Sales

Rivian has begun accepting orders for its electric delivery van (EDV) from a broader customer base in the United States. Previously, the company dedicated production of these vehicles solely to the e-commerce giant, Amazon.

This shift follows the expiration of Rivian’s exclusivity agreement with Amazon at the end of 2023. Since then, the American manufacturer has been conducting EDV testing with several major US fleets in preparation for a mass-market launch. Prices for the EDV start just under $80,000.

“Over the last year we have been focusing our efforts on testing with some larger fleets, and we’re really pleased with how those trials have gone,” stated Tom Solomon, Senior Director of Business Development at Rivian. “As a result, we’re excited to now be able to open sales to fleets of all sizes in the US, whether they want one van or thousands. Our vehicles are designed to not only be among the safest on the road, but will also help fleet owners to reduce the cost of fleet ownership and their carbon footprint.”

The original agreement between Amazon and Rivian, established in 2019, stipulated the delivery of 100,000 electric delivery vans to Amazon. Deliveries began in the US in 2022, with all units slated to be on the road by the end of the decade. By January 2025, Amazon already had 20,000 Rivian EDVs in its US delivery fleet.

Amazon remains a significant investor in Rivian, currently holding a 16% stake. The EDV is offered in two sizes, the EDV 500 and the EDV 700. According to the company website, the vans are equipped with a Type 2 and a CCS1 connector in the US, rather than the NACS connector. While current Rivian models can utilize Tesla’s Supercharger stations with an adapter, the R1 and R2 models will feature the NACS connector.

Regarding charging capabilities, Rivian states the delivery vans can handle up to 100 kW DC charging. The smaller EDV 500 has an estimated range of 161 miles (approximately 260 km), a payload capacity of 2,663 lbs (about 1.2 tonnes), and 487 cubic ft (about 14 m3) of cargo space. It measures 6.3 meters in length, 2.9 meters in width, and has a four-meter wheelbase.

The larger EDV 700 offers a range of 160 miles, with a payload capacity of 2,258 lbs (about 1.02 tonnes) and 652 cubic feet (about 18.5 m3) of cargo space. Its dimensions include a length of 7.3 meters and a height just under three meters, with a wheelbase of 4.7 meters. Both variants feature front-wheel drive, generating up to 235 kW, and are powered by a 100 kWh battery. The EDV 500 is priced starting at $79,900 in the US, while the EDV 700 is priced from $83,900.
