REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN – The Saskatchewan government has unveiled a series of fee modifications set to take effect this year. Among the most notable changes is a doubling of the registration fee for electric vehicles.
The government has stated that the annual fee will increase from $150 to $300 per vehicle. Funds generated from this increase will be allocated to road maintenance and repairs. The aim, according to officials, is to ensure that electric vehicle owners contribute a comparable amount to those with gasoline-powered vehicles, who currently pay for road maintenance through provincial fuel taxes.
In addition to the EV registration fee, Saskatchewan is raising administrative fees for provincial parks. This includes fees associated with lease applications and renewals, building permits, and shoreline maintenance. The province is also implementing changes to wholesale liquor mark-ups for wines with an alcohol content between 14.5% and 16%, a move expected to save retailers approximately $226,000.
Furthermore, Saskatchewan is introducing a new flat fee of $1,000 for construction permits related to facilities handling hazardous goods.
