Second Arrest Made in Connection to Fatal Shooting of Birmingham Student
Authorities have charged a second suspect in the killing of Xavier “Zay” Colvert, a 22-year-old mechanical engineering student from Birmingham. Kathrine Rashun Brown, 25, is now facing capital murder charges in connection to the fatal shooting.
Brown was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson Jail on Thursday morning, where she is being held without bond. The investigation revealed that Brown allegedly set up Colvert to be robbed by 18-year-old Jeremy Dewayne Thomas, who was previously charged with capital murder.
Colvert was discovered dead inside his white pickup truck on January 31, 2024, after Birmingham police responded to a shots fired call. The young man was a student at Alabama A&M and had recently returned home to take a break and spend time with his family.

Xavier Colvert, 22, was shot to death during an apparent robbery in Birmingham.
According to investigators, Brown and Colvert knew each other from high school. Colvert’s family stated that Brown had recently contacted him, claiming she was going through a difficult time and needed his help. On the night of the shooting, Colvert picked her up, believing he was assisting a friend.
Colvert’s father, former Jefferson County Constable Robert Colvert III, shared memories of his son. He described Zay as “a genius, mechanically inclined, one of the smartest people I know.” He added that his son was not involved in any street activity and was known for his positive attitude. “His presence was known when he walked in the room by his smile and laugher,” Colvert III said. “Xavier was a big teddy bear.”
This case brings renewed attention to the issue of violence in the Birmingham area.
