Late Night host Seth Meyers has continued his humorous criticism of the recent Tesla promotion at the White House, calling it a “desperate and embarrassing infomercial” orchestrated by Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Meyers presented several clips of Trump explicitly criticizing electric cars over the past few years.
Tesla had set up a display of its vehicles for Trump on the White House lawn. The former president even made a show of purchasing a new Model S Plaid in what appeared to be an attempt to boost the company’s stock price. Trump’s public endorsement of the cars was likely intended to signal support for his close ally, Tesla CEO Elon Musk. However, as Meyers pointed out, this move substantially contradicted Trump’s long-held negative views on electric vehicles.
“Not only was this flagrantly corrupt,” Meyers stated, “but this entire gambit depends on Trump convincing his MAGA supporters to buy Teslas after spending months telling them on the campaign trail, ‘Electric vehicles suck.'”
Meyers then played a montage of Trump’s past statements, where the former president made disparaging remarks about electric vehicles. Trump claimed that “they don’t go far, they cost a fortune,” and “they don’t work in the cold.”
“Oh yeah, these people definitely sound like they’re gonna buy a Tesla,” Meyers quipped, playing a clip of a crowd at a Trump rally booing electric vehicles, highlighting the apparent disconnect between Trump’s past statements and his recent support for the company.
